& to be honest
i actually don’t think it’s overrated.
it seems like everyone always bashes on valentine’s day,
and sure, maybe florists and card shops and chocolatiers only regard february 14th as a day that takes their books from red to black.
and even though people should love each other every day as much as they claim to on valentine’s day, i don’t think that makes it any less of a day to celebrate.
because that’s all it is - a day of celebration.
valentine’s day is about celebrating love.
love for your family - your kids, your parents, your siblings, your grandparents, your godparents; love for your friends; love for your pets; love for your significant other - girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, crush; love for your co-workers; and just love for your fellow human beings.
i don’t think it needs to be romantic love at all.
i’ve spent many a valentine’s day just hanging out with my best friends or going out to the movies or dinner with my parents.
and i also don’t think it requires people to spend money.
i feel like just making something for someone or cooking a meal or just doing a simple favor for a person you love is plenty.
valentine’s day isn’t about boasting of how many gifts you give/receive from your significant other, and it isn’t about fishing money out of your wallet to please your husband/wife and get the day over with.
to me, valentine’s day is just a simple, pleasant reminder to show the ones you love that you love them. it gives you the opportunity to take a break from the chaos and business of life and just spend quality time with a person or people that you appreciate and who appreciate you. few gifts are greater than the gift of time and i think that’s what valentine’s day is really all about. time with loved ones.
